Live Photos: Frightened Rabbit and Oxford Collapse (The Roxy, Los Angeles - 6.23.08)

P1080061.JPGScottish rockers Frightened Rabbit unleashed a powerful set of galloping songs that won over every member in attendance, and Oxford Collapse were no slouches either.

My first time catching a live set from Brooklyn's Oxford Collapse certainly won't be my last. The trio blazed through song after song, "let's do another one," while the crowd ate every slice of what the band cooked up. Oxford Collapse draw battle lines between the ferocious punk of Jawbreaker and the gritty rock of Buffalo Tom, but it's their energy and relentless attack that has lodged itself in my brain. Their forthcoming album, Bits, drops August 5 on Sub Pop.

Along with fellow Scottish artists Mogwai, The Twilight Sad and even Belle and Sebastian, Frightened Rabbit proved that they belong in that stable of talent. Their latest album, The Midnight Organ Fight, which is one of this year's strongest record so far, provides a deep range of mood, driving rhythms and emotional vulnerability that comes across perfectly in a live setting. Songs like "The Modern Leper," "Head Rolls Off" and a tough-as-nails rendition of "Fast Blood" couldn't have been executed any better.

Check out our photo coverage below, and keep an eye out for an interview with singer-guitarist Scott Hutchison later this week.
