Top Ten Lists: Best Songs of 2008

Portishead_Coachella.jpgWe're only halfway into 2008, but that's not stopping us from creating a rundown of some of the best songs of the year.

On any given day I would change the order depending on my mood. There are moments when Bon Iver sounds more bold and daring than anything on this list, then I throw on Ladytron's "Ghosts" and the infectious chorus reminds me how far the band has grown from its days emulating Kraftwerk. But, ultimately, it's Portishead who get the job done; ravaging through Can-inspired rhythms with haunting synths and razor blade guitar notes. That song demonstrates the band's ability to wrap tension and fear around anything they produce.
