Coldplay: 'Yes/Chinese Sleep Chant' MP3

coldplay.jpgChanneling Bailterspace and Yo La Tengo, Coldplay's "Yes/Chinese Sleep Chant" makes a sharp left turn at four minutes and five seconds, careens around an invisible cliff, and somehow winds up driving through the clouds. Where the hell did this come from and why is Coldplay teasing us?

Maybe it wouldn't have sounded as dramatic and beautiful without the slower, more methodical "Yes" preceding the reverberated and distant vocals of Chris Martin, but fuck it. The guitars are awesome, driving, and thick as a steady pulse of rhythm drives the train.

To suggest that Brian Eno might have had a big influence on the musical direction of this jammer would earn me a  slap in the face from any die-hard shoegaze/dreampop nerd, but think about how cool it would be if the group simply busted this jam out on their own terms. It's possible, right?

"When we started we had high hopes, now my back's on the line, my back's on the ropes," sings martin. No kidding dude. But seriously, think about track seven anytime you're questioned about your musical integrity, and get to work on the next album already.
